Shared Housing for the Aging

Dire Need for Group Homes for UAC’sI received a call yesterday from a gal in New York who had been directed to our web site regarding group housing. Her Church was preparing for a visit from a government official to see if they might be a candidate to house some of the thousands of children ages 3 to 18 who were being abandoned at our border towns. They are now referred to as UAC’s, “undocumented alien children.”  She was hoping to understand group housing rules, zoning, licensing and just how many children per bedroom

may be allowed. When she said the commitment was to be 18 months, I realized the impact this will have on the many cities and towns throughout our country where these undocumented children will be placed. The need for Group Homes, Foster Care, and Maternity Homes is evident, especially here in San Diego.  Who will foot the bill?

All parties to this debacle predict that the numbers will mount. The Obama administration estimates that these unaccompanied/undocumented/underage immigrants will cost U.S. taxpayers up to $2 billion by the end of 2015.  The real costs will be higher. Many of the teenage girls have babies with them or are pregnant. Pregnancy and motherhood increases entitlements for these teenagers and strengthens their “deferred deportation” status. If they deliver their babies in the United States, they are mothers of U.S. citizens. In addition, the Affordable Care Act (ACA) is in place to take care of health problems, at no cost to these children, as a humanitarian response.

If you are a caregiver, human services worker, healthcare provider then the opportunity is now for you to become a home owner and start your own business by purchasing a property adequate for a Group or Foster Care to shelter these children. One Roof Living has geared up to accommodate existing group homes and find larger facilities so they may realize the benefits of Federal Childcare subsidies. Additional information for group home start-ups can be found on our site.

Our Pacific Sotheby’s team of experienced Realtors® specializes in locating both small and large homes equipped for group living situations.

On June 30th, 2014, President Obama urged congress to authorize a “surge of resources” to total $2 Billion to shelter and process tens of thousands of unaccompanied children who have flooded our borders.

FEMA now in conjunction with Department of Health and Human Services, Homeland Security and the Department of Defense are organizing housing and medical treatment of the undocumented children.
